Pregnancy and Gestation

This page will contain info on breeding a doe, care of doe during gestation and kidding (birthing process)

Nigerians and most nubians cycle year round. the heat cycle of most does is every 21 days, though sometimes once bred, they can cycle again in as early as 3 days. The heat cycles are the strongest in spring and fall, though some will take in the heat of summer, and the cold of winter. Gestation lasts about 145-155 days. with the average at about 150. Most first fresheners carry more toward 150-153. experienced does seem to kid right at about 146-148 days. though this varies from goat to goat.

I prefer to breed my does for the first time when they are no younger than a year, preferably a year and a half or two years old. that way the doe can put all she has in her milk production, if you breed a doe very young.. generally, her first freshening udder will be small, and won't be a good producer..

Things we do before we breed our does:
  • give does and bucks a booster shot of bo-se.
  • worm with ivermectin or valbazen
  • increase the does grain ration 1 month before you breed her

once the doe is bred, i continue grain for until she enters her 2nd month of gestation.. then i stop feeding grain for the nigerians, i continue grain for the nubians and lamanchas.
